Darkness Ascends: An Interview w/ Lolita Dark - The Last Doctor

Darkness Ascends: An Interview w/ Lolita Dark

by on Sep.11, 2012, under Interviews

In preparation for their first out-of-state appearance, Lolita Dark took the time to answer a few questions regarding their new approach to the Japanese rock scene in the US. Not your average band, the members are no strangers to a scene that has seen better days. Determined to make the most of it, Ray, Rain, and Joey, along with May and Patrick, hope to connect with their audience on a deeper level, and maybe even teach their audience a little something about staying true to yourself.

Q: Where/when/how/why did Lolita Dark come about?

Ray: 3 of us here are from Dig Jelly and I’ve always wanted to have a band where I can express where I came from, my roots, and Joey and Rain were supportive to the thought!

Q: How would you describe your sound?

Ray: The Best Mixture of two worlds colliding.

Q: Why ‘Lolita Dark’?

Ray: I grew up struggling to conform to society and lived years in the shadow.

Q: Why all the darkness?

Ray: It is Cathartic.

Q: Do you hope to connect with others who have gone or are going through a similar experience?

Ray: Yes, as a matter of fact, my goal with this band is to help girls and guys who struggled or are struggling through their adolescence as I did. I want my music to help them cope, vent and to express themselves.

Q: Would you say Lolita Dark is yourself personified in music?

Ray: It is like.. As if I am re living my adolescence through Lolita Dark. To rearrange some of the things I’ve done, and or left undone that I’m not proud of.. having all the knowledge and power of today as an adult, I could’ve saved so many people including myself from the mess once we were in. Well I’m doing that through this band, trying to reach out.. Spreading love.

Q: Do people seem to connect with you?

Ray: People do connect with me well. I’m an open book. I communicate freely through my words in my music. How they Interpret it is up to them :)

Q: Have your fans been supportive of your new direction?

Ray: My fans are very loyal and always interested in my next move.

Q: From your perspective, why is the rock scene getting stale?

Ray: People forgot to be true. Everything is done to be perfect. Well, we aren’t perfect and when we are venerable others can relate.

Q: What do you hope to achieve with this new approach?

Ray: This is an extension of my artistic style. I want to communicate w universal through what’s in my heart that I put a melody to…

Q: What do you think your costume brings to a gig? Do you feel it becomes more of a performance than just a concert?

Ray: We always like to dress up on stage but what we wear on stage is also the extension of our personal style.

Q: For those seeing/hearing you for the first time, what do you hope they take away from your music/performance?

Ray: I want every aspect of our performance to be the encouragement for them to stay true to themselves. Not be afraid to be different, unique, and stand up for their rights and beliefs, support others who are brilliant yet outcast because of their appearances, etc. As I always say, being normal is boring, being one thing is tiring, I wanna be so many things, I wanna be Lolita Dark.

Q: For those attending Nan Desu Kan this weekend, what would you like to say to them in hopes of luring them to your performance Friday night?

Ray: The best After party in our make-up artist’s hotel room!Lol On the serious note… We put an emphasis on “entertainment” of our live performances. I never take for granted when people “choose” to invest their time to come see us. I am the host of the evening and I always try to be the best in the world!

Q: What are you looking forward to most at the convention?

Ray: Meeting all you awesome people in Denver sweetie!! Xx

A Special Message from Ray:

Because of the distance between us, it may be a while before we shall meet again… so let’s make the precious 60mins of this coming Friday evening, an experience we both shall not forget for a lifetime.
